This is Part 4 of my Kailasa study at Ellora in India.
What fascinates me about this monument is that it was not built by adding stone. It was created by removing stone from a massive rock formation.
The builders worked with the existing mass and gradually revealed architecture, open space, columns, halls and sculptures.
That changes the way I think about architecture.
The empty space is not simply empty. It is part of the design.
What was removed became just as important as what remained.
And that leaves me with one question:
Can removing something create more meaning than adding something?
