Kailasa Temple
Also known as the Kailasanath Temple, Cave 16 at the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India.

- It was cut out of a basalt cliff.
- It has been described as the world’s largest single monolithic excavation.
- It was not constructed with blocks, but carved out of a cliff.

Date
The main construction was built during the late 8th century CE.
757–783 CE, attributed to the Rashtrakuta ruler Krishna I.
There are no records of the building process.
The main structure appears to belong to Krishna I’s period.
Some sculptures, paintings, repairs, and additions may have been completed under later rulers.

The wider Hindu section at Ellora developed over a longer period, roughly between the 7th and 10th centuries CE.
It is safe to say, then, that it was created in the late eighth century, rather than claiming that it was finished during one short reign.
This monument was excavated, not constructed.
What is important is that it was not built stone upon stone, but by using an architectural style called subtractive architecture. Kailasa emerged downwards, and material was taken away. This building style is called subtractive architecture.
Normal building style is upwards, not downwards.

How the Temple Was Carved
Builders selected suitable basalt
Ellora lies in a volcanic rock formation known as the Deccan Traps. They selected fine-grained basalt that could be carved accurately. They also studied natural horizontal and vertical joints in the rock that helped split and remove material more efficiently.
Trenches
Three enormous trenches isolated the temple block.
Stoneworkers cut deep trenches into the hill around three sides of a planned rectangular mass. This separated the future temple from the surrounding cliff and created the open courtyard around it.

Work was done from top to bottom. That is how it became a freestanding building.
The roof was formed first, followed by the tower, walls, halls and sculptural details.
The top-down process had its advantages
- Rubble fell into areas that had not yet received their final carving.
- Finished areas and sculptures were less likely to be damaged by later excavation above them.
- Builders could temporarily retain large masses of rock as working platforms.
- The building remained connected to the mountain while its major form was established.
Teams most probably worked on different areas at the same time.

At the same time, they worked on or in the main shrine, gateway and courtyard walls. So it was possible to work on the floor and on the roof at the same time.
Although many elements appear to be independent buildings, they remain part of the original rock formation.
Sculptors Completed the Surfaces
Specialised workers could refine the surfaces. Chisel traditions at Ellora were highly developed, with separate stages likely involving rough excavation, architectural shaping, figure carving, surface finishing and painting. Traces of paintings still survive in portions of the temple.
What Makes the Design Extraordinary
Kailasa reproduces the appearance of a constructed South Indian temple, even though it was carved out of the mountain.

Kailasa Indian Temple
This temple contains architectural forms that are normally built separately. These include columns, beams, roofs, pavilions, stairways, gateways and temple towers. Stone columns appear to support roofs, but structurally they are continuous with the rock from which the entire complex was carved.
The design of the Kailasa Temple reflects established South Indian traditions, especially architectural ideas associated with Pallava and Chalukya monuments.
This was an attempt to reproduce a complete structural temple complex through excavation.

Removing major sections of rock.
If a stone was removed accidentally, it could not be replaced.
They needed reliable methods for:
- Setting out the central axis.
- Calculating the depth of excavation.
- Maintaining symmetry while working downward.
- Positioning internal halls beneath completed upper forms.
- Coordinating several groups of workers.
- Allowing for differences and fractures within the basalt.
The general principles of Indian temple geometry and stonework are understood, but no complete Kailasa blueprint or technical manual has survived.
The Identity of the Architect
A later tradition names an architect called Kokasa and tells a story in which the temple was begun from the top so that the queen could quickly see the tower and stop fasting.

The story may preserve memories of a real architectural tradition, but it was recorded centuries after the temple’s principal construction. It cannot be treated as direct eighth-century documentation.
How the Labour Was Organised
A monument of this complexity required far more than one brilliant architect. It would have involved master planners, surveyors, quarry workers, stonecutters, architectural sculptors, figure sculptors, painters, labourers and supervisors.
We do not know whether these teams were divided, paid, trained or scheduled.
Kailasa belongs to a long and well-documented Indian tradition of rock-cut architecture.
Ellora contains Buddhist, Hindu and Jain excavations produced over several centuries.
The remarkable achievements came from accumulated knowledge, skilled organisation, careful surveying and generations of experience.

The Strongest Architectural Interpretation
Kailasa is both temple and sculpture.
A constructed temple is assembled from many individual parts. Kailasa was conceived as one continuous mass, with courtyards, columns, figures, halls and empty spaces produced through removal.
Its architecture is therefore not only the stone that remains. Empty space surrounding and passing through the stone is equally important. The builders effectively transformed a mountain into an inhabitable image of another sacred mountain. UNESCO describes it as the culmination of Indian rock-cut architecture and an exceptional technological and artistic achievement.
